Not enough hens on the hill! That’s what the Birdman of Wild Wing Company reported after inspecting and cleaning our 11 owl and bluebird boxes in the orchard. Six turned out to be bachelor pads but 3 had full blown nests. All the bluebird boxes had lively tenant activity and two owl boxes still have “For Rent” signs. If you know of any bachelorettes looking for a beautiful and peaceful place to rent, we have space!
Owls are one of the best and natural forms of pesky rodent control in an organic orchard such as ours. Bluebirds consume a large numbers of insects; that is why orchardists since the early settler days have been installing special boxes to attract them.
